No fool here…with Fool’s Gold September 29, 2009

I just downloaded (for free) this off of itunes. Surprise Hotel by the band Fool’s Gold. What a piece of magical candy for the ears. I felt like I was back in Ecuador again. With infectious guitar riffs and Hebrew lyrics, this song rocks socks off in way that would make Mossad proud. Although the song is 6:48 long…every second is well worth it. I don’t recommend playing this song at work, due to ensuing rhythmic seizures, plate smashing, and aggressive foot stomping. People will think two things: 1) you need a trip to Atascadero or 2) you trying out for “Dancing with the Stars.” You have been warned.
Took the video link down, some elements were questionable, although not entirely inappropriate. Better be safe than sorry I always say.
Faith and Skateboarding September 20, 2009

I remember when I got my first skateboard, my sister broke it. I remember when I bought my first Christian skateboarding t-shirt, the washing machine destroyed it. I remember when I became a Christian at 16, my old life was obliterated and my new self was to take hold.
Often think back at the times of when I was into skateboarding and reminded myself of how unusual it was to be a skateboarder and a Christian at the same time. Like was a living oxymoron. However, my passion (and lack of skill) kept my desire to hit the pavement constant. There was faith and skateboarding.
Although, I hardly skateboard now and when I do it looks like a second run circus show, I still love it. Although the style and setting has drastically changed over the years, I still think of faith and skateboarding.
Here’s a great article…
Faith….How do we convey faith to a generation that has so much? Skate Ministry allows an opportunity to reach the youth in many ways. Let’s face it. It takes a lot of faith to ollie off a stair case and think that your board will actually land under your feet. There are many lessons that we can relate to Christ in the most popular sport in the US Youth population today.

Need Volunteers? Check this out! September 12, 2009

In student ministry it’s often hard to find (and keep) volunteers. Student ministry is not for everyone, but that doesn’t mean one has to live with the angst of being spread thin due to a lack of volunteers. I came across this great article on YouthMinistry.com. It provides a quick look at how one can find and keep volunteers. Enjoy!
About 60.8 million people volunteered through or for an organization at least once between September 2006 and September 2007 according to the Bureau of Labor
Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor. Believe it or not there are millions of people out there eager to volunteer their time. So how do we attract these people?
M83…an 80’s Music Masterpeice! September 11, 2009

In today’s day in age, it’s a rarity to find 80’s throwbacks that are decent. It seems that everyone want’s to be on the 80’s music/new wave bandwagon. Very few are capable of capturing the essence of what made 80’s music so magical. One exception is M83. With their 5th album Saturdays = Youth, they create a shoegazing/dream pop masterpiece. The entire album sounds like something that should have ended up on a John Hughes film. Filled with reverbed guitars, lush vocals and layered, yet danceable synths, M83 creates a romantic, yet dark portrayal of love and pain, hate and happiness. This album will change the way you look at 80’s music. Enjoy :.)
Songs worthy of a gander:

These are the lyrics from Owl City’s song Meteor Shower on their new album “Ocean Eyes.” Beautiful lyrics…beautiful song!
I can finally see,
That you’re right there beside me,
I am my not own,
For I have been made new
Please don’t let me go,
I desperately need youI am not my own,
For I have been made new
Please don’t let me go,
I desperately need you
The Gifts August 12, 2009

It’s been over seven years since I’ve taken a spiritual gifts test, so in the interest of streamlining some things in my life and getting ready for life change, I decided to revisit the test again to see if God has matured me in some form or fashion. Not only was this a gifts test, it was also a personality test. This peice of work took me about two hours to complete…can we say comprehensive. Anyway, here’s what the test told me about myself.
Spiritual Gift Profile
- Discernment- evidently I have the wonderful ability to discern between truth and fiction, when someone is telling the truth and when someone is lying. I find this to be true in my life. I’d be surprised how many times I walk away from a conversation knowing that the person just straight up lied to me.
- Pastor/Shepherd- Makes sense since I’m happy doing what I do. I love what I do, but not always the politics that come with work. I like relationships and how they grow.
- Knowledge- Evidently I’m capable of understanding “certain facts in the mind of God” thus a revelation of certain facts. From what I gather this is not just merely “knowing loads of things” but being available to God to be used to understand circumstances in one’s lives.
Personality Profile
- Passive/Reserved- my basic motivation is stability and support.
- Passive/People-oriented- Biblical example: Moses

Most full-time, and especially part-time, youth workers could easily be considered overworked, undervalued, and therefore underpaid. But we love students. Student ministry is our life. It’s both what we do and who we are. Most of us will do whatever it takes to reach students; we don’t do it for affirmation from other people and would do it for free anyway. So with that heart, I’ll introduce a thought that might surprise you coming from a fellow youth worker: we need to expand our job descriptions.
